Lambskin, which is the trade-off to understand at this price. Lamb is soft immediately and drapes better than anything else here, but it's a thinner hide, so it scuffs and wears through where cowhide would just patina. The tell that this is the budget option isn't the leather, it's the lining: cotton flannel in the body where the others use Bemberg. If you want a jacket that feels broken in on day one and you're not trying to hand it to your kid, this is the best-wearing thing at the price. Only comes in brown, and it's dark enough that it works with black.

Semi-vegetable tanned cowhide, which is the thing to notice. Most jackets at this price are chrome tanned, which is faster and cheaper and never really develops. Veg tan patinas. The two-stage dye means the color has depth instead of sitting on the surface, so when it scuffs you get tone rather than a bald spot. Bemberg lining, hand-burnished finish. I know a lot of you hate on Buck Mason, but a real biker jacket in cowhide under $900 at retail is genuinely hard to find, and the tassel pulls are a nice touch.

Vegetable-tanned Italian cowhide with a Lampo zip. Two things worth knowing. Veg tanning takes weeks instead of hours and produces leather that actually develops with wear rather than sitting still, which is what the product copy is politely saying when it talks about the jacket becoming distressed over time. And Lampo is the Italian zipper maker that shows up on jackets three times this price. When a brand names the zip, they're telling you where the budget went.

The boxy cut is the other thing you're buying. This is a fashion silhouette, not an archive reproduction, and it will date faster than the Ralph Lauren. That's the trade: one of these is a jacket you keep for twenty years, the other is a jacket that looks right now.

Lamb leather, mottled finish, high funnel neck, pitched to sit higher at the back. That last detail is a pattern decision most brands wouldn't bother with, and it's what separates design from styling. This is also a women's jacket, which is the entire subject of the next issue, so I'll leave it there except to say the aviator cut is one of the ones that translates.
